Pour Djamila

For Djamila

1960: Algeria still belongs to France. 22-year-old Djamila, accused of having planted a bomb in the Brasserie des Facultés, is arrested by soldiers and may be executed. Gisèle Halimi, a lawyer in favour of Algeria’s independence, sees that Djamila has been tortured and takes on her defence. Numerous public figures, including Simone de Beauvoir, support her fight. Her trial is held in Caen (France), where she is proven innocent; she is set free but her story has only just begun…
