“During the first half of the 20th century, two dictators, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, had a stranglehold over their respective countries. One, from the south, came from a Catholic background: a married man with a large family. The other was from the north, from strict protestant upbringing and who desired only Germany as a wife… For a long time, they believed they could work together but too many things set them apart. As if between the brilliance of Italian melodrama and the exaltation of a certain form of German Romanticism, there could be no union…" (Extract from the prologue of the film).
