In the early 1960s, a slum in the outskirts of Paris. Families live in appalling poverty and violence is an everyday occurrence. Among these families, there is that of cantankerous yet resourceful Jacques, 13. His life is transformed by his meeting with Father Joseph, who has come to live among those he calls "his people".
