Steve Reich, Phase to Face
Looking like an eternal student with a baseball cap on his head, Steve Reich is a man who is serene and…in a hurry. His style, which appeared in the wake of "repetitive music" in the 60s, beguiles us today with its unique sense of rhythm and intoxicating melody, a cross between Bartók, Stravinsky and Debussy, not to mention jazz, traditional music and Hebraic cantillation. From Tokyo to Rome, with the Germans of the Ensemble Modern or the Italians of the Ars Ludi, the Coro Ha kol and the Quartetto Prometeo, or the festival Automne in Normandy, with the Americans of the Theatre of Voices and the legendary Steve Reich Ensemble, as far as the Manchester Velodrome, where he attended the premiere of his latest work 2 x 5 with the New Yorkers of Bang on Can, we accompany one of today’s major musicians beyond borders.
