Le Roi, l'Écureuil et la Couleuvre
The King, the Squirrel and the Grass-Snake
This story begins in 1651 at the height of the Fronde, when Fouquet is already 35. It concludes a few decades later when Fouquet, imprisoned for nearly 20 years, dies from poisoning. The film relates Fouquet’s irresistible rise, his financial success, his success with women, the construction of his chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, which would prefigure Versailles, and the way he would deal with the opposition of Colbert, who would bring about his downfall, and let him rot to death in a gloomy, remote fortress.
