Thirteen-year-old Becky lives with her three little brothers and sisters and her mother Corinna on the outskirts of town. A string of fathers have come and gone, with the shabby conditions just staying the same. In the meantime Corinna drowns her sorrows in drink and Becky holds the house. And she does it willingly. While Becky dreams of the big love, Melanie, her best friend, knows just how to play the boys. When Becky gets caught in the bus without a ticket, she is rescued by a curious young man, Bente, with whom she falls in love. She follows him, venturing out for the first time beyond her familiar surroundings. Becky comes too late to pick up her siblings from social services, and the authorities are threatening to take the little ones away from the mother. For Bente things are not all well, his parents are not enthused about his new friend. Becky does everything she can to hold on to her happiness.
