Don Giovanni

How, in what way can television hold its own when filming an opera, especially an opera like Mozart’s Don Giovanni? How do you make the performance of such an opera a moment of television, a spectacle that is essentially televisual and not just a passive recording of a splendid show with its own scenic, spatial, emotional and, of course, musical rationale? Yoshi Oida directed the opera. His staging is stripped down, with minimal sets. If Oida sought a theatrical emotion, David Stern a musical emotion, our aim could be nothing less than to create a televisual emotion. This Don Giovanni is a total cinematic immersion in the opera company: the singers on stage sand in the wings and the musicians in the orchestra pit, conducted by David Stern.
