Mr. Tahara lost his voice after a throat cancer operation. Though his horn-playing days are over for good, he now conducts the university orchestra. Receiving his directions mostly in writing, the musicians also rely on his facial expressions and sweeping gestures during often spectacular lessons. He drives his students to feel the music deep within themselves, an essential that will allow for perfect harmony among the orchestra’s 80 musicians during the performance. One thing guides him: the satisfaction of seeing the emotion caused by the music surge out of them.
