Chateaubriand
Chateaubriand is in Saint-Malo taking a decision about his final resting place. He delves into his past. His youth at Combourg spent under the thumb of his omnipotent father, his years of "society" apprenticeship in Paris, his travels to America. Then comes the Revolution, turning his life upside down. Then the years of exile in England, followed by a return to France crowned with literary success. A loyal defender of the Bourbons, he serves them to the best of his abilities, attempting to reconcile the monarchy with the liberties of the individual. Lastly, his acquaintance with Madame de Récamier - his muse, his sylphid, his womanly ideal - lastingly remains in memory as the symbol of nascent romantic love.
