Una Mattina d'agostoA Morning in August
At dawn on August 1, 1944, an SS unit entered Sant'Anna di Stazzema, a small Alpine village in Tuscany. Three hours later, no life remained. Women, children, the elderly, all were massacred. In all, 560 dead. It was only 60 years later, thanks to the testimonies of some surviving children, that those responsible for the slaughter were brought to trial and sentenced. But the accused will never go to prison and we will have to settle for the symbolic value and the historic scope of the conviction, which had been awaited for too long.
