The Arctic Circle

The film explores both positive and negative aspects of Arctic development. One of the most alarming is the rapid disappearance of ice covering the Arctic Ocean, which had declined by 2007 to its lowest level since records began. Ironically, this same decline has made it possible to search for more new deposits of fossil fuels, in places which were previously inaccessible. Recent years have seen intense competition building among countries with Arctic coastlines, all with an eye on the huge amounts of oil and natural gas known to be lying beneath the ocean. But active resource development inevitably leads to more emissions of CO2, which in turn makes climate change worse.
