Tchekhov, un écrivain au bagneChekhov, Writer in a Penal Colony
At the outer reaches of eastern Siberia lies a remote and forgotten island. In 1890, Anton Chekhov crossed Siberia from Moscow to the island of Sakhalin, a cloud-blackened place of exile, punishment and coal. His curiosity as a doctor and a writer attracted him to its inhuman penal colony, on which he would write a concise, objective and terrifying account. A century after his death, this documentary retraces the writer’s journey and attempts to re-transcribe Chekhov’s view of eternal Russia. Mixing past and present, it relates for the first time the history of this oil-rich island and meets the descendants of its men and women, convicts or political exiles.
