Surging Cities

Dubai is the world's largest airport, and the world's unique group of artificial islands, and it doesn't stop there. Awash in petrodollars, Dubai aims to be number one in everything. Its emerging icon: the Burj Dubai. At least 800 meters and 160 floors high, this skyscraper will be the world's tallest building upon its scheduled completion in 2009. The government declares that it will be the greatest symbol of Arab prestige since the Pyramids. Machinery and materials are amassed from across the globe and foreign firms are rushing to win new projects. In the midst of a world recession, Dubai is a vortex of development.
