The action is set in Sardinia, from 1937 to 1950. Sonetàula is 12 years old when the story begins. He tends the sheep while his father serves an unjust prison term. He is raised by some amusing relatives such as his grandfather and his uncle, who teach him all about nature. When Sonetàula turns 18, he gets into a fight with his friend and rival Bulluzzadu: summoned by the police, he remains silent about what happened and flees. A frightened, lonely fugitive, he becomes a bandit, thief and murderer.
