Renzo Piano, the architect who designed the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, was at the height of his art when he decided to embark on an unusual adventure in 1990: the building of a cultural center in Nouméa, New Caledonia. Piano had to walk the Kanak walk to immerse himself in this Pacific culture that was so foreign yet so fascinating to him.
