Princesitas de MéxicoLittle Princesses of Mexico
For many young Mexican women of poor backgrounds, the traditional coming-out party when they turn 15 represents the passage from girlhood to womanhood. In a severe social and economic context, where the fathers go off to work in the United States and where young girls often find themselves prematurely pregnant, this fete amounts to a magical aside, like a fairy tale. Tania, Nadxiely and the young girls of the Instituto de la Juventud await the day when they in turn can live the illusion of being a princess. Their family’s financial sacrifice is equal to the importance given this celebration: one could do without a roughcast house facade or a car, but not this chance to dream, even if it lasts no longer than a waltz.
