Ysé, a young woman of 30, is frustrated with what little love her husband, De Ciz, gives her. She allows the advances of Amalric, but prefers a young man, Mesa, who has been rejected for the priesthood. He lets this fighting woman seduce him and discovers passion in her arms. Ysé is pregnant with Mesa’s child, but she rejects him. De Ciz has had the tact to drop out of sight so she finally falls into Amalric’s embrace. As they are about to blow up their house so as not to be taken alive by Chinese revolutionaries, Mesa arrives to take back his child. Almaric mortally wounds Mesa and insists that Ysé flee with him. She decides to stay with Mesa and share with him the final moments of their transfigured love.
