Nollywood, le Nigéria fait son cinéma

Nollywood, Nigeria Goes to the Movies

What do we know about Nigeria? In general, its oil, corruption and crime. But in the past 15 years, there has been a phenomenon that is changing the face of the country: Nollywood. With some 1,500 pictures a year, Nigeria is now the third largest movie producer, after Hollywood and Bollywood. Movies shot very quickly on shoestring budgets with poor picture and sound quality. But the Nigerians just love them and for good reason: they are movies by Africans and for Africans, which almost all can enjoy. These movies aren’t released in theaters, a form of leisure most Nigerians can’t afford, but only on DVD or CD and sold in the street.
