Living with Van Gogh
In south China, the 15,000 inhabitants of the village Da Fen manually reproduce the paintings of western masters at a price that defies competition. They furnish 70% of the copies of paintings in the world. The most reproduced painting is Van Gogh's "Sunflowers". Light-fingered and humour, the film takes us behind the scenes of these Chinese “Sunflowers”: from fabrication to marketing. Apart from the anecdotal aspect of the phenomenon, the film examines the notion of “copy” in Chinese culture, which reposes on that of the model and imitation. This film forms a diptych on the subject with Mains d'œuvres, also made by Cheng Xiaoxing in 2008.
