Les Lavigueur, la vraie histoire
On April 2, 1986, the "Journal de Montréal" ran the following front page headline: "A $7,650,267 Fairy Tale." The Lavigueur family had just hit the lottery jackpot, the largest sum ever awarded by Loto-Québec. The story of the Lavigueurs has long fascinated the media and the public at large. Yet the saga of this now legendary family was fraught with drama and huge losses. It’s destiny suddenly changed the day a total stranger returned to Jean-Guy Lavigueur the wallet he had lost a few days earlier and which contained the winning lottery ticket. Our information about the Lavigueurs is limited to what we learned from the media of the time: incomplete, often false scraps which served as grist for the gutter press’s mill. They were derided, belittled and insulted on a daily basis. They were victimized by the unscrupulous methods of unethical journalists. Strangers, so-called relations, claimed their part of the booty on phony pretences.
