From early 2008 till now, Le Début de la faim has travelled to areas of the world affected by the food crisis and other parts where world leaders are supposed to discuss it. With one abiding question in mind: "Is this crisis temporary? Can we find a solution?" 860 million starving people, victims of subsidies in Cameroon, Senegal, dependency on food imports in Haiti, speculation in Thailand, "Mega Food Parks" in store for India; meetings from summit to summit - FAO, G8, WTO, Europe – with those in charge and a few heads of state... And we get a sense of the colossal gulf between the policies that have been advocated for the past 30 years and whose only credo has been the law and realities of the marketplace. Proof of this is to be found in the person of Ibrahima Diop, a Senegalese peasant, whom we have been filming since 2005. And the rising anger of the Via Campesina in the past decade… As well as the new sense of helplessness among world leaders. Among all the ongoing crises, the food crisis shows that certain responses and forecasts are alarming.
