Resistance member Jean Ricouart was arrested in March 1944, following his involvement in the execution of collaborators. Deported to Germany and subsequently freed, he returns to his village in northern France in February 1946. There he is reunited with his first love, Marie, who gave birth to a son, Lucien, during Jean's captivity. But their happiness is short-lived when Jean is arrested just after their wedding night.
