Kinshasa Beijing Story
In the melting pot of Kinshasa, hundreds of Chinese expatriates are changing the face of the Congolese capital. It has become apparent that Africa has reached a turning point in its history: the continent’s antiquated, inflexible relationship with the West has been replaced by partnerships between developing nations, full of economic promise, but fraught with danger too. Mirroring these figures, we also hear from African Whites: former colonials and expatriate businessmen nostalgic for a lost golden age and unhappy to see Africa’s cards being redealt. Focusing on the human and social relations of three communities, this convergent picture of China’s role in the Democratic Republic of the Congo turns all the clichés about development on their head, offering a frank, original insight into globalisation in Africa.
