When the Buddhist monks stood up against the government, in September 2007, I immediately wanted to go there and meet them. But Burma is a forbidden country, closed for journalists and filmmakers. That’s why my colleague Birgit Hillenius and I went in December 2007, on a tourist visa. The film is about the dilemmas of filming in a forbidden country and the ideas of the monks. They represent the intelligentsia and the conscience of the country and form a threat to the government despite their peaceful behavior.
