Grotte d'Ouvéa

The Ouvéa massacre is deeply engraved in the collective conscious and yet, when one comes to think of it, no precise image comes to mind. The island had been declared off-limits to the press and placed under a state secrecy seal. This film is the day-by-day retelling of how 27 gendarmes were taken hostage by Kanak separatists. It began on April 22, 1988 with attack on the Fayoué gendarmerie on the island of Ouvéa and ended on May 5 when the gendarmes were liberated safe and sound and 19 hostage-takers executed. Did François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac have any desire to negotiate? What part did Bernard Pons really play? Did Jean-Marie Tjibaou have any contact with political authorities of the time?
