Esclaves des mers

Slaves of the Sea

In south of the Philippines, Mario, a boy from the Bajao tribe, the "gypsies of the sea", is recruited as a deep-sea diver for pitiful pay by an unscrupulous ship’s captain. With Alonso, his brother, and four hundred other children, they fish in the coral reefs using a dangerous technique: they are thrown into the water with stone weights tied round their waists to unfurl a huge net and gather the fish inside it. Exhausted, threatened by sharks, harassed by the brutal captain, and their number decimated by daily accidents, the children rebel. Alonso and other children are killed, provoking a massacre. The surviving child-divers find themselves on their own on a leaky tub drifting aimlessly across the high seas. Slaves of the Sea is based on a true story.
