Der Mann auf dem BalkonThe Man on the Balcony
Rudolf Gelbard was deported to the concentration camp Theresienstadt with his Jewish parents in 1942. Since 1945 he tries to understand the Nazi regime's crimes. In this movie Gelbard leads us to certain venues of his childhood in Vienna, where the "Jewboy" had to endure humiliation after Hitler's march to Austria in 1938. He also witnessed the Crystal night with its pogroms and the fire of the big synagogue in Vienna. In October 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt with his family. A substantial part of this documentary is dedicated to Rudolf Gelbard's experiences in Theresienstadt, where he had to spend a crucial part of his childhood and youth from 1942 to 1945. Amongst the 15,000 children to be brought to this forecourt of extinction, only about 200 survived, including him.
