Commissariats du Monde : Casablanca

A Police Station in Casablanca

The police station of Derb El Kebir, a densely populated working class quarter in Casablanca, is run by Captain Zaid with an “iron hand.” In North Africa’s largest metropolis, as in other cities, the police station is the dramatic nerve center of the district. It is the site of tragedies, but also comedies which here veer toward the tragicomic, the tragicomedy of a modern, authentic Morocco, far off the tourist circuits. The stories that are played out here embody the essence that drives the lives of the Moroccan people today and contributes to the portrait of a country in the relation between its inhabitants and the forces of law and order.
