Ali and Oulougbey are both in love with young Mohabat. Unable to choose between them, she decides she will marry the one who wins the buzkashi in Boukhara. The two suitors cross mountains and steppes to compete in the equestrian sport, full of cries and dust. Throughout the film, a poet and a painter each elaborate on this mystic tale of the Central Asian steppes in their respective manner.
