Bananes, à régime forcé
Unknown in western nations at the start of the 20th century, the banana is now the most produced, exported and consumed fruit in the world; 16 millions tons produced each year for $16b in revenues. These huge profits are the source of a conflict between protectionism and free-market economics: on the one hand, Latin American nations backed by American multinationals, producers of the banana dollar, fight for the easing of trade restrictions; on the other, the European producer-nations of the banana euro and the countries of the ACP zone (Africa-Caribbean-Pacific) who defend import quotas and customs duties. Can we find a way to guarantee a proper share-out of value among the market’s different players?
