Bach à la QuarteBach to the Bass
Bach à la Quarte is a profile of double bass player François Rabbath. Self taught, this French artist whose parents were Armenian performs classical music and jazz with equal talent. The documentary unveils for the first time the magic of this virtuoso’s interpretation, and penetrates the intimacy of his art. It focuses on a challenge Rabbath set for himself a long time ago: he wanted to interpret Jean Sebastien Bach’s six suites for cello only – but with a double bass only, and at the same octave as with a cello. From Paris to Venice, his performances were filmed over ten years, alone or with world famous musicians and are part of the documentary. The film opens a window on his quest to reach Bach’s perfect mystery and leave for generations to come the first interpretation of Bach’s suites performed with a double bass.
