A War in Hollywood
Hollywood used the Spanish civil war as a subject in more than 50 films, between 1937 and 1975, when Franco died. This evolution is narrated through the personal story of Alvah Bessie, a Hollywood screenwriter who fought as a member of the International Brigades in the civil war. The documentary shows how cinema can be used as a political propaganda. It includes excerpts from movies such as Casablanca, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Way We Were, among others. It also features comments by actress Susan Sarandon, screenwriters Arthur Laurents and Walter Bernstein.
