Z Mrtvého Domu

From the House of the Dead

Final opera by Leos Janacek, based on Dostoevski’s prison camp memoir, Notes from the House of the Dead, staged by Patrice Chéreau and conducted by Pierre Boulez.
Act One: The inmates go about their daily activities. A new prisoner, the nobleman Goryanchikov, sentenced for political activities, attracts the attention of the common law prisoners and the hostility of the camp commander. Among them we meet Tatar, Alyeya, Luka and Skuratov. Act Two: A year later. Goryanchikov and Alyeya have grown close. The nobleman offers to teach him to read and write. This is the beginning of a festive night in which Skuratov relates the crime that brought him here. Goryanchikov and Alyeya drink tea. Unnerved by this sign of privileged status, a prisoner loses his temper and attacks Alyeya. Act Three: in the crowded dispensary, Goryantchikov tends to Alyeya. All ears gradually turn to Shishkov’s account. At the end of the story, Luke expires. The camp commander tells Goryanchikov he is being released. Alyeya kisses him, calling him father.
