Un mousquetaire de l’armagnac en ChineArmagnac for Rich Chinese
Over the past two decades, China has been experiencing an unprecedented economic development that is profoundly transforming its society. French traditions exert a special pull, one of the most surprising being the appeal of Armagnac, France’s oldest brandy. In China, Armagnac has become a symbol of economic and social success. It is sold in gilded bottles and is consumed, so it seems, with fresh fish! Jacques François Ryst, a brandy producer in Condom, exports his Armagnac to China and, in turn, imports Chinese porcelain and old furniture to France. He is our pretext to visit the Gers region of France, where we will discover the world of Armagnac as well as the fate of the Chinese porcelain and old furniture forsaken by the Chinese to become objects of desire and profit in Europe.
