Tondues en 44Shorn in 44
Until only recently, historians have tended to play down the incidents of women having their heads shaved at the Liberation for collaboration, considering it a peripheral phenomenon. While the “shorn-headed woman” is a powerful image of the Liberation, this practice was widespread across the country in 1944-45. For most of these women, it was almost always the same story – in occupied France, reckless or unthinking young girls committed the unthinkable: sleeping with the enemy. This film travels around France in search of Madeline, Jacqueline and Therese, victims of shearings at the Liberation. In these overlapping portraits, the film goes back into the past as it raises questions about French society in general.
