Thierry Escaich au miroir de Jean-Sébastien Bach

Thierry Escaich Reflections of Johann Sebastian Bach

The guiding spirit behind this film is to ask contemporary composers to present their work, their careers and their inspirational world "in the mirror" of a musician from the past to whom they feel especially close.
This documentary proposes to illuminate the bonds that link the musical repertory we are all familiar with and the creative act today. Thierry Escaich, composer and principal organist at the Saint-Étienne-du-Mont church in Paris, is the first of the series' artists. As a remarkable improviser, he plays his own compositions on the organ as well as those from the classical repertory, in particular the works of Bach.
He also teaches the art of the fugue and improvisation to his students at Paris' Conservatoire national supérieur de musique. Composing, improvising, teaching and "animating" the liturgy are so many moments that draw him closer to Bach's music of three centuries ago.
