Shougen Kiroku Manila ShigaisenRemembering the Battle of Manila
In February 1945, towards the end of the Second World War, the US military marched on Japanese-occupied Manila and engaged Japanese forces in a fierce, month-long urban battle. The Battle for Manila left 120,000 dead and remains one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific theatre. Both the Japanese and American military had anticipated an urban battle for Manila would result in large numbers of civilian casualties. However, while the Japanese military partially withdrew from the city, it left behind a force of soldiers prepared to counter the American attack. Facing determined resistance from these Japanese, the US military heavily bombed the city, in an effort to minimize casualties among its own forces.
