The persona of Raffi Lavie has many faces. He is a key figure in the development, since the early 1960 's, of new Israeli art. He is a guru of sorts of three generations of artists, most of whom have been his students at The Midrasha, one of the two leading art academies in the country. Lavie the painter, the art and classical music critic, is arguably the most influential cultural figure of his generation, an embodiment of the image of the "Sabra" – a prototype of the eternal child, arrogant, honest and direct, if not brutal, wise, yet at times ridiculous, but rarely lacking in substance and meaning. In 2005, he had to give up the lease of his mythological apartment in Tel-Aviv, where he resided for 33 years with his wife Ilana and their two sons. At age 69, Lavie faces new challenges as he is forced to begin yet another phase in his life.
