Red World
The war in the Congo began in 1998 and ended in 2003. The causes of the deadliest war since WWII lie in the legacy of the colonies and the attempt to rob the country of its rich sources. The so-called "World War of Africa" was the biggest conflict in the history of Africa with 9 countries taking part (Congo, Rwanda, Angola, Namibie, Zimbabwe, Chad, Uganda, Burundi) and more than 20 armed groups. The filmmakers go in search of the reasons behind this war in some of the Africa's richest mines. They travel under extremely difficult circumstances to the remote region of Itouri and follow two underage gold-diggers into an old Belgian mine. Sotiris Danezis and cameraman Demosthenis walk for two kilometres through dark tunnels and record unique footage of the inhuman conditions children work under for a handful of gold.
