There are children who have no place in the world. These are children placed by their parent in specialized institutions, children who don’t behave according to the usual norms. They are not mentally or physically handicapped, but they don’t behave “normally.” Janaína was one such child: black-skinned, poor and entrusted to the Febem – a home for minors – in the 1980s. She wouldn’t stay put in her cradle, hurt herself, was punished, didn’t talk and had no contact with the other children. Today, two decades later, what has become of Janaína?
