Pillage au CongoThe Pillage
The film is set in the province of East Kasai, a mining region which was long off-limits to foreigners and which provides a third of the world’s industrial diamonds. Mbuji Mayi, the capital of the province, now has three million inhabitants, a hundred times more than at the time of independence. In this vast urban area, where open air diamond markets are to be found at every street corner, water is a luxury and electricity intermittent.
Understanding the decay of Mbuji Mayi means understanding the failure of the main diamond company. The MIBA, the Bakwanga Diamond Mining Company, is the city’s main employer. From the criminalization of the State under Mobutu to the one-sided contracts made during the war, the MIBA has always been the country’s cash cow. Analysis of a collapse.
