NunnanThe Nun
Marta has chosen an extremely radical lifestyle: at age 19, she joined a Carmelite order. Living under a vow of silence, she is never allowed to leave the convent and can only see her family seven times a year, in a special visitor's room with bars separating the nuns from their guests. This documentary is about a young Swedish woman's choice to live her life for God alone. The convent made a unique exception to its strict regulations by allowing Maud Nycander to meet Marta. For ten years, the filmmaker followed her and her Catholic family: her mother, first pleased with her choice then struck by an unexpected sadness; Helena, her closest sister, also considering joining a convent; Samuel Johan, her big brother living a bohemian life in Paris; and Emanuel, her little brother who tried to stop her from joining the convent and still wishes she would come home.
