Nous étions l'Exodus
From Baltimore to Hamburg, from Marseilles, Portodevenere and Port-de-Bouc to Sète and Haifa – the odyssey of the Exodus remains the most spectacular of post-war sagas of illegal immigration. In the summer of 1947, 4,500 refugees, survivors of the Shoah, were loaded aboard three "cage ships" of the British navy in the harbor of Port-de-Bouc, in the south of France. Today, the role played by France and the French in this amazing chain of solidarity strikes us as the high point of the birth of the Jewish state. For the first time, players and witnesses movingly look back on this great adventure. 1947 was the year of a conscience restored, that of all these peoples who had lost hope.
