May 8, 1945 was a day for celebration in France: the Allied victory over Nazism. In Algeria, that same day, a peaceful demonstration turned into a riot. In Setif, then throughout the region, the crackdown by the French Army caused thousands of victims, most of them peasants.
The child of immigrants from Setif, I never heard anyone in my large family talk to me about the bloody events of May 8, 1945. Today, I need to know why.
