Le Septième Juré
In the early 60s, Grégoire Duval, a reputable provincial druggist, murders a young woman in a fit of madness. There are no witnesses. He decides not to say anything. The young woman’s last lover, Khader Boualam, is accused of the murder instead. Ironically, Duval is called up to sit on the jury trying a crime he himself committed. Moved by the fate of this Arab laborer, an ideal culprit in the eyes of the city’s respectable society whose racism has been exacerbated by the end of the Algerian War, Duval takes the road of redemption. Standing out in court, he shows up the lack of rigor in the criminal investigation and the weakness of the prosecution’s case: the outcome of the trial becomes uncertain. By trying to clear Khader, Duval upsets the social order. And often, order matters more than the truth.
