Le Beurre et l'argent du beurre
Fair trade is in fashion today. It claims to aid the most underprivileged nations by helping them to emerge thanks to a fairer redistribution of revenue. Shea butter, made by the poorest women in Burkina Faso, is finding increasing favor in Europe where it is used in cosmetics or as a cacao butter substitute. Following the lives of these women, the film explores the problems of survival in Africa. Various fair trade schemes are said to help them. But who really stands to profit? It is hard to escape the implacable laws of the marketplace, and a handful of individuals alone try to break away. In this confusion, how many consumers have the time and the means to look behind the label?
