La vie sera belle
A story of friendship and complicity. A story of courage and shattered dreams. In the beginning, there was Pierre Benoit and Lucien Legros, sophomore students at the Lycée Buffon in 1940, as inseparable as they were unalike. What united them? A rejection of defeat and the Occupation. In the fall of ‘41, Pierre Benoit joined the clandestine Communist Party. Legros, the idealist, followed suit. Others joined them: Jacques Baudry, Pierre Grelot and Jean Arthus. The “Buffon group" was born: five young bourgeois men from fairly Catholic families, who did not seem cut out to be partisans in occupied Paris. After a series of daring attacks on the occupation army, they were arrested and shot on February 8, 1943. “Life will be beautiful. We will depart with a song,” wrote Pierre to his parents a few moments before his execution.
