La Juge et les LascarsThe Judge and the Deliquents
In 2005, 82,500 juvenile delinquents were brought into court. A minority of repeat offenders, less than 10%, still present real problems. We spent a year following three multirecidivists in their confrontation with the judges of the Melun tribunal. Third-generation children of immigrants or children of French origin, they often come from underprivileged neighborhoods, suburbs and housing projects. They are in the 16-to-18 year age bracket, and already are a source of shame. Children of troubled families, “riffraff” for some, their futures seem uncertain. Opposite them: the juvenile court, with its judges and social workers who, in hearing after hearing, try to provide some bearings to teenagers who usually are out of bounds.
