La Cigogne et l'Éprouvette
There is no resisting the latest technological advances in vitro fertilization, the donation of ovocytes to surrogate mothers, and the genetic selection of embryos. Filmed at the Cochin and Erasmus hospitals in Paris and Brussels, this film follows an assisted reproductive technology service, which must cope with a wave of new technologies and the dreams of couples. It shows the daily lot of doctors and their teams, who must deal with complex requests that raise ethical questions in a universe bordering on science fiction. We have never been this close to that "Brave New World" predicted by Huxley, the world of cloning and the artificial uterus. This film dares to adopt a tone of caustic comedy for this serious subject, which can seem overly technical. It verges on the zany, on a range of comic situations at the borderline between the comprehensible and nonsense, but the dramatic is never far. We never lose our way in this human comedy of ours because it is as universal as the principles of reproduction and survival. But who is in control of what today?
