La Boillat vivra !The Boillat Will Live!
This is the story of a green valley in Helvetia. Its inhabitants used to live happily, at least, as happily as one could live in Switzerland. In 1855, the Boillat foundry came into existence to become the industrial jewel of this valley. In the land of peaceful labor, in the heart of the Berne Jura, the class struggle seemed a thing of the past. But suddenly, Boillat's 350 employees went on strike. What happened in this corner of the Jura? Early in 2006, they occupied their plant for 37 days. In complete solidarity, both cadres and employees, backed by the entire population, the churches, the parties and the unions. Management of the Swissmetal group, to which their plant belongs, had announced plans to relocate production. What, then, is the purpose of their UNIA union, the role and weight of democratic Swiss institutions?
